1.
When did you first get interested in DVD and why?
As since as I heard it was being released I knew that like the record the days of the laserdisc were soon numbered and it would be something I would be interested in acquiring. The simple fact is size matters and no matter what the advantages of Laserdisc over video the size and cost factor was always going to weigh heavily against building a film collection with it.
2. Did you
ever expect DVD to become as popular as it has now?
I did. It was just axiomatic truth that like CDs DVDs would become the film goers medium of choice for the home.
3. What are
some of your favourite movies and some of your favourite DVDs?
Where to begin … divide into genres or attempt to produce a true list of my favourite films. The original Star Wars Trilogy, Aliens, The Big Sleep, The Third Man, Pat Garret and Billy the Kid, Blade Runner, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, Princess Mononoke, Rushmore and Donnie Darko are just a few that spring to mind.
In terms of DVDs favourites would include the Almost Famous (Bootleg Edition) Criterion versions of Rushmore and Brazil, The Fellowship of the Ring Extended DVD and The Evil Dead - Book of the Dead edition (its just so tactile).
4. Which
'not so good' DVDs would you never want ruining your collection?
There are a lot of crappy editions of classic films floating around at the bargain basement end of the market, such as Python's Holy Grail, Time Bandits, Withnail and I that are simply the video transferred onto DVD. The other issue I have is the common practice of studios of releasing a bare bones edition and then a year or two later releasing ultra extra editions of the films. Come on why bother, except to dupe some poor unsuspecting fan out of their hard earned cash or make them pay twice for the same film.
5. Which DVD(s) not yet available are you looking forward to most being
released?
A new real directors cut edition of Blade Runner and Special Editions of Burton's Batman and Batman Returns (which have all been rumoured for many a year).
6. Have you ever gone to extraordinary lengths to satisfy your DVD
addiction?
Each overseas trip I take I kid myself that I am supposedly travelling to see new places and meet new people but the truth is its really all about what new DVDs I can buy.
