1. When did you first get interested in DVD and why?

Sadly, I owe my DVD addiction to one thing: Buffy. Although I already had an enormous VHS collection, and have been obsessed about film for as long as I can remember, it was the relatively early release of Buffy on DVD that really caught my attention. Before that I was interested in the medium, but was in no particular hurry. I was planning to get into DVD eventually, but holding me back was the onerous cost of converting to DVD on the meager income of a student. However, the promise of Buffy on DVD was particularly alluring, and I just couldn't resist the lure of those nice shiny box sets. From then I haven't looked back, and neither has my DVD collection.

2. Did you ever expect DVD to become as popular as it has now?

In one word, yes. As a durable, inexpensive, and technically superior medium, like CD's before them, DVD's always had the potential to become a massive success, all that was needed was time.

3. What are some of your favourite movies and some of your favourite DVDs?

My favourite film of all time is Chinatown, which comprises a nice DVD offering. However, my favourite DVD package would have to be Spirited Away, which wraps a breathtaking film in a fantastic bag of extras. I'm a bit of a film snob, so some other favourite films and DVDs of mine include 28 Days Later, Lost In Translation, Ed Wood, Apocalypse Now, Lost Highway, Donnie Darko, Taxi Driver, The Big Lebowski, Amores Perros, Rear Window, The 400 Blows, Fight Club, Dead Man, Magnolia, O Brother Where Art Thou, 25th Hour, The Ninth Gate and Trainspotting. And not forgetting Buffy and Angel.

4. Which 'not so good' DVDs would you never want ruining your collection?

If there is one thing that I hate, it is sub-standard big-budget Hollywood productions. Thinking about films released theatrically in the last few months, three I will never own on DVD are The Day After Tomorrow, Troy, and Van Helsing. Just the thought of them ruining my nice collection makes me shudder. Add other below average flicks such as Titanic, Deep Impact, Godzilla, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Dreamcatcher, either of the Lara Croft films, the Charlies Angels films, etc, the list goes on and on. From a technical standpoint, like most I hate flipper discs. Also a pet hate are good films released as bad DVD packages - be it from a bad transfer, poor audio, lack of extras, or the knowledge that an awesome Region 1 DVD exists for a film that is not paralleled by the Region 4 release.

5. Which DVD(s) not yet available are you looking forward to most being released?

Since the release of the first season back in February 2003, I have been eagerly awaiting the second season of Twin Peaks more than any other DVD I can think of. Also on the TV scene, the release of Seinfeld, the second and third seasons of the criminally underrated The Shield, and the entirety of outstanding prison drama Oz are all DVDs I am looking forward to. Recent films that I can't wait to add to my collection are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and both volumes of Kill Bill. And I have been forever waiting the release of Serpico and Badlands on DVD. Ooh, and not forgetting Firefly and Season 5 of Angel, to round off my Joss Whedon collection.

6. Have you ever gone to extraordinary lengths to satisfy your DVD addiction?

Luckily, all my sufferings have been confined to the monetary realm. That, and the hours and hours spent going out of my way to search for specific films, find the latest on upcoming DVDs, or be first in line when new DVDs are released, all when I probably should be studying. Oh well, it's well and truly worth it.
