What
is DVD?
DVD,
or Digital Versatile Disc (or Digital Video Disc - who really cares?)
is the latest generation of disc-based storage medium released to consumers.
DVD has been designed to supercede and replace all aspects of storage
which currently use CD, Laserdisc or tape.
DVD has been accepted widely in the electronics community and it's hard
these days to buy a computer without being asked if you'd like a DVD-ROM
drive in it. All of the major Hollywood studios are releasing movies to
DVD and at the same time slowing down their laserdisc output.
Some of the major benefits of DVD are:
- Fit over 133 minutes
of video (8 Gb of data) on a single sided DVD. Nearly 4 hours of video
(17 Gb of data) on a dual-layer single sided DVD. Double that again
for a double-sided, dual layer DVD.
- Digital Audio can
be stored with an many as 8 discrete tracks for multiple languages,
audio formats (DD, DTS, PCM etc).
- Anamorphic 16:9
enhanced video can be stored and "downsized" automatically by the player
for normal 4:3 TV's.
- Multiple subtitles.
- Multiple angles
can be stored on the disc and selected "on-the-fly".
- Fast forward, rewind,
track change, chapter selection are as easy as CD.
- Durable - have
you ever "worn-out" a CD from playing it.
- Compact size -
gone are your 30cm Laserdisc sized discs, these are just 8cm (same as
CD).
You will begin to
see DVD appearing more and more in large retail stores, your local video
shop and in your friends and family homes. This is the next wave!!
