Rotel RR990 LCD Touch Screen Remote
Review written by Scott Fagg on 20-Feb-1999

The RR990 is also sold under MRS, DSE and a number of other labels.

Design

The RR990 is an lcd touch screen based learning remote control. The LCD is backlit and lights up when ever operated in the dark. The light detector is built into the face of the LCD.

The RR990 provides 8 pages of buttons. The pages are labelled CD, AUX, AMP, TAPE/TUNER, TV, LD, SEL1 and SEL2. Each page offering slightly different button layouts, that are generally applicable to the component they are intended for. For example the TV page includes channel up / down buttons, while the CD page includes skip buttons.

The manual is clear and easy to read.

Ergonomics

Being an LCD touch screen you really have to look at the face to see which buttons you're pushing. You can't blindly grab it and hit the right button. The unit is reasonably solid and easy to hold. It's a two handed operation , one to hold, one to hit buttons.

It looks a lot classier than a pile of different looking remotes on the coffee table.

Programming

It doesn't come pre-programmed for any brand of equipment, so it needs to be programmed before it can be used for anything. Programming is done in the usual fashion of pointing your existing remotes at it and recording the signals.

Each button on each page can be either programmed with a function from an existing remote or be programmed with a macro. This in theory allows for over 200 macros OR commands or combinations of both. This is limited by available memory though.

Unused buttons on each of the pages can be turned off, to make for a less cluttered on-screen appearance. There is also the option to use some of the pre-programmed layouts that offer a minimal set of buttons.

Quirks?

When the batteries go flat, the macros and learnt functions are retained, but changes to the button layouts are lost.

The RR990 cant deal with remotes that have auto-repeat functions (ie volume buttons) You have to repeatedly hit the up/down bottons to control functions like volume and fast forwarding.

It chews threw batteries quite quickly.

Summary

A very flexible remote, although it does have some operating quirks.
