Yamaha RXV-590 Receiver
Review written by Ernie Roberts on 3-Jun-1998

This is a great receiver. Having said that, there are many great receivers available, but truly this one makes you think "I REALLY like this amp" every time you turn it on.

From its unassuming front panel, to the crystal clear sound you get from all around you, this is a true pleasure to listen to.

For music (2ch - stereo), it is never harsh and keeps the full range of music coming at you, even when stretched towards the limits of it's power output. As a side note, I would like to point out that I always find that Yamaha have very conservative power ratings (compared to say the Sony home range), often with plenty of power left in reserve for peaks in the sound.

However, and this is where the Yamaha shines, plug in a VCR, DVD or a LD and turn on the Prologic mode. Wow, Yamaha really know what they are doing when it comes to putting out the goods for home theatre. Although the rears are only rated at 20 watts, so long as you don't plug "hungry" speakers into them, you'll get excellent results all the time. The DSP modes, to me at least, are a little bit of a joke, however some of my friends think these are the 'bee's-knees' so that is a subject of personal preference, but you can't deny that the 590 does it well.

Overall, this amp is a few years old now and is showing it's age (lack of 6-ch inputs, low output to rear effects speakers etc) in the home theatre forum, but if you are looking for a good quality amp to plug into the family room, hookup a CD player and a video, you could do far, far worse.
