THE MOVIE

This boxset contains the last 11 episodes of the second season of Xena: Warrior Princess. Mixing Greek and Roman mythology with just about anything the writers felt open to "re-interpretation" the series focuses on Xena seeking redemption for her evil warrior past with the help of her side-kick (and long rumoured, although never actually indicated in the series, lesbian companion) Gabrielle.

Disc 1
Destiny
A fatal wound causes a delirious Xena to relive the experiences that transformed her into a warrior and gave her reason to live.

The Quest
Gabrielle discovers that she is the new Amazon queen. Meanwhile the spirit of Xena invades the body and mind of Autolycus and leads him on a quest to locate Ambrosia, the only substance which can restore her life.

A Necessary Evil
When the ruthless Amazon Velasca achieves immortality by consuming some Ambrosia, Xena devises a plot to defeat her by pitting her against the immortal Callisto.

A Day in the Life
Xena and Gabrielle battle the world's largest giant and a ruthless warlord, all in one day.

Disc 2
For Him the Bell Tolls
Gabrielle must intervene when Aphrodite casts a spell on Joxer to try to prevent a royal marriage.

The Execution
Meleager the Mighty is accused of murder and has been sentenced to execution and Xena and Gabrielle attempt to save their friend.

Blind Faith
Xena is accidentally blinded while battling a young warrior who has kidnapped Gabrielle and risks losing her sight forever in order to save her friend.

Ulysses
Xena and Gabrielle join Ulysses in his quest to return home which is being hampered by the god Poseidon.

Disc 3
The Price
Xena rallies Athenian troops in a desperate battle against the seemingly unstoppable and mysterious Horde, but it is Gabrielle who ultimately finds a way to end the terrible siege.

Lost Mariner
Xena and Gabrielle help the lost mariner Cecrops break the centuries-old curse Poseidon has imposed on him.

A Comedy of Eros
When Cupid's young son starts to play with his father's arrows shoots, Xena falls for the warlord Draco, who is smitten by Gabrielle, who only has eyes for Joxer.

THE TRANSFER

Video:

The show is presented in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The image is sharp and well defined, although there is some grain and the occasional pixelation it is limited and doesn’t distract. Blacks are strong, and shadow details are good. Colours do vary across the 11 episodes from strong to muted, however I don't believe that this is due to any problems with the transfer itself. Overall a good visual transfer that is proberly above broadcast standard.

Audio:

The episodes have an English Dolby Digital 2.0 track. The subwoofer is used well and is used mainly for the many fight scenes. All of the dialogue and sounds are clear and easy to hear. Lip sync is good (for the most part). A good audio track for a TV series DVD.

THE EXTRAS

As with the boxset containing the first 11 episodes of season 2, the only extra included on the release is a photo gallery featuring pictures of the cast on the third disc. Very disappointing considering the large number of extras included on other TV series DVDs.

SUMMARY

Overall a nice package and a must-have buy for fans of the show or those who enjoy fantasy/adventure series.
