THE MOVIE
Seven Little Australians is based on the best selling novel by Ethel Turner and in the early 1970s it was adapted to the screen by Eleanor Witcombe. The mini series has now been restored by the National Archives of Australia and re-released on DVD. The story is set in late 19th century Sydney and revolves around Captain John Woolcot (Leonard Teale) and his wife Esther (Elizabeth Alexander), step mother of seven energetic children; Judy (Jennifer Cluff), Meg (Barbara Llewellyn), Pip (Mark Clark), Nell (Anna Hruby), Baby (Tania Falla), Bunty (Mark Shields-Brown) and the General (Christian Robinson). The mini series also stars Ruth Cracknell as Martha. Here is a quick look at each of the ten 30 minute episodes.

THE TRANSFER
Video:
Seven Little Australians is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. The series has undergone restoration by the National Archives of Australia, so it would have been interesting to see what the print originally looked like as it is still loaded with film grain and film artefacts. According to the press release, the series was initially broadcast in black and white when released in 1974 but it was actually filmed in colour. I must admit I was quite surprised with how rich the colours were, especially the red stripes on the military uniforms. The level of detail isn’t all that flash and there is quite a bit of background noise to be observed during the interior scenes. Both discs in this two-disc box set are dual layer (DVD9) discs but the layer change was not evident on either disc.
Audio:
This DVD features an English Dolby Digital 2.0 channel soundtrack. The audio transfer is quite good. Dialogue is clearly audible throughout all ten episodes and there were no noticeable audio synch problems. Similarly, the narration at the start of each episode is highly intelligible. Unfortunately there are no subtitles on this DVD.
