THE MOVIE

BloodRayne is in a word crap, the acronym “POS” springs to mind as a suitable shorthand reference. The man responsible for this abomination is Uwe Boll who has made something of a career of video game adaptations, this being his third that has had something of an international release, the other two being House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark (both of which I understand to be on a par or worse than this).

BloodRayne was written by Guinevere Turner, who perhaps more notably wrote the screenplay for American Psycho. Turner must share some of the blame for the film as must the cast, which include Sir Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Madsen and Udo Kerr. They can and should do better than this with most of the them dialing in their performances. Special mention must go to Meat Loaf and Billy Zane who are appalling and you have to wonder what was Boll asking for on set if he was satisfied with this.

However it is Boll who is the mastermind behind this fiasco and he needs to be taken out and shot before he can perpetuate anymore film making horrors. If you see a film associated with this man be forewarned that this is time you will not get back so do not make the choice to watch something of his lightly as it does not even fall into the so bad its good category that transformed Showgirls into a modern comedy classic.

In a nutshell BloodRayne is about the struggle between humanity and the vampires, who are lead by Kagan (Kingsley). The key to Kagan’s destruction is Rayne (Kristanna Loken), who is half vampire, half human, and is the product of Kagan’s rape of Rayne’s mother. Rayne having witnessed Kagan murder her mother is desperate to have her revenge against him and she is aided in her quest by the Brimstone Society, a secret society who are humanity’s sword and shield against the vampire threat.

BloodRayne will appeal to no one, not even fans of the video game, one every level its part, from costumes, production design, script, character, narrative, acting, direction, music, you name it, it sucks. An interesting fact about the production though is that the half naked women in the scene with Meat Loaf are Romanian prostitutes, as they were cheaper than hiring extras.

THE TRANSFER

Video:

A basic video transfer has been provided. The print is dark at times, with some grain video artefacts throughout. Details are a little on the soft so, though colours are fairly natural.

Audio:

An ok audio track has been provided (bit rate 448 kbps). It reasonably front focused and the rears do not get much of a workout except for the score. Dialogue is all too clear and distinct and there are no lip synching issues. The score and other audio effects have been reasonably well rendered.

THE EXTRAS

There are no extras.

It has been given an appropriate bare bones DVD release.
