THE MOVIE

At Richard Abernethie's funeral his younger sister, Cora announces that he was murdered. The Day after, Cora herself is murdered, hacked to death by a hatchet while she slept in her bed.

The family solictor Entwhistle asks Poirot to investigate. On visiting the family home, Enderby Hall, Poirot soon discovers that all the family are lying about their alibis.

I have to admit I have a certain fondness for the David Suchet 'Poirot' series of telemovies, they are superb. Although this was made recently, accounting for the widescreen ratio and stereo audio, there is still the feel that you are watching some contempory story filmed in the 1940's after the war.

David Suchet's subtle potrayal of highly intelligent detective, from the 2nd most read books in the English language (Agatha Christie), the 1st being the Bible, is subdued yet brilliant, and you never seem to know where the story is going to end up. With excellent period settings and for authentic period cars, just make these Poirot mysteries a joy to watch.

I won't go more into the plot, without spoiling the ending, the advertising blurb above is enough, but there is the usual twists and turns, so by the end you have decided the whole cast was involved in the murder....or worse you think you have solved it , thinking to yourself how smart you are, and are totally disappointed when you weren't even close...but that is the fun of these Agatha Christie stories.

Highly enjoyable.

THE TRANSFER

Video:

Nice clear 16:9 enhanced 1.78 ratio recent televsion production from UK's Granada Televsion. Crisp picture, but not suprising as was only televised early last year. More than acceptable, with no indictaion of any flaws in the video quality.

Audio:

Bog standard Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo for television.....more than suitable for a mostly dialogue driven production.

THE EXTRAS

None...nada...not a single sausage or even a rissole of an extra.

SUMMARY

Another of the Agatha Christie Poirot series with all you would expect from the excellent series, it might be nice if there was more than one movie on each disc, as with no extras it would certainly fit. However at a RRP of $19.95, it is a relatively cheap nights entertainment. Just long to sit there with you freshly popped corn and soft drink, and enjoy.

Recommended.
